Welcome to maxed out man helping you
0:06
become the man you were made to be hey guys it's Kevin Davis from the
0:12
maximum podcast it's episode number 29. this is uh we're here with carmelo
0:17
gustella uh he gave me the Italian pronunciation which I will never get right so we'll go with that uh Carmelo
0:24
was is a uh Rebel Barber as he just described it to me so he's a barber fashion expert
0:30
um grooming expert has his own product line Melody and he was the 2019 GQ
0:36
Barber of the year and so uh I'm super excited to have Carmelo on here because this is a topic that is important to me
0:45
um and I don't think it's that important to a lot of men so I think this would be super educational back in the day I
0:51
don't even know if this I was thinking about this but I don't even know if this politically correct to use this term anymore but I would have been called a
0:57
metrosexual so that was like the old old school term for basically a guy that took care of
1:04
themselves well groomed um you know kind of heterosexual guy
1:09
that did those things so that was kind of this term nothing coin but uh Hey welcome uh I appreciate you coming on
1:15
board I'd love to hear more about you and what you've done and your I know you've been in the industry for a long time
1:22
yeah I've been in a long time in the industry my name is Carmelo gustella I
1:27
started my career at the age of nine in Sicily wow now it's very rare to really
1:33
start at the age of nine uh barbering but my dad was old school uh he started yeah he was born in 1943
1:42
the war almost started and uh he had to stop going to school and
1:48
himself he worked in the land like from the age of nine years old and probably he went you know what you need to learn
1:57
something as well none of my friends worked in a nowhere I was the only one at nine years
2:02
old what do you want to do do you want to be a plumber do you want to be a mechanic
2:08
and all right what's a barber shop he introduced me into the barbershop at
2:14
nine years old I like the environment of the barbershop was uh you know you start soaping up
2:21
people you start sweeping the floor you you you go out you this is like a
2:26
sicilian barber shop in that you know in the in the 8485
2:33
uh in Sicily so we're like in you know proper Sicily and uh
2:40
yeah I don't know within a year or two I learned how to shave how to cut hair so
2:45
by the age of 11 I could shave and cut hair wow and I was
2:51
in a small town of 20 000 people and it's in the province of agricento
2:57
and a loads of uh Sicilians moved to uh
3:03
the US New Jersey our family over there and they had to leave Sicily anyway I'm
3:10
still in Sicily I'm learning to be a barber uh the
3:16
one funny story at the age of 12 I I was
3:21
doing my own teacher's hair in Secondary School no I I it's when I think back this is
3:27
like Okay so we've won uh I still go to
3:33
school still go to school and um and I had to then move away
3:40
we were away at the age of 19 I went into the army okay I was two years in the Army in the
3:47
Italian Army um well I was supposed to be one year but then I signed an another year voluntary
3:55
uh because then I I like I liked uh I think it was more to get away from my
4:01
small town of Sicily of 20 000 people did my Army I think I went back yeah I
4:08
went back to Sicily for one year still barbering doing her
4:13
there's so many things I want to say on this code there's uh yeah so I went to Turin for
4:20
three years and then I moved to London in 1999. and I've been in London since uh London
4:29
okay I I I was born in London my parents moved in the 60s in the UK to work over
4:36
here and they decided when I was seven to move back to Sicily
4:43
I always had this urge to sort of come back to London UK and experience life
4:51
and also to what I do with hairdressing uh with barbering
4:57
I felt I could give more and London has been a fantastic place for me
5:04
it's like the it's you know not the fashion Capital world but definitely I would assume it's way more fashion for
5:10
forward than a 20 000 person town of Sicily when I moved in 99 I was very
5:18
lucky to join uh one of the best places in London in Mayfair opposite claridge's
5:24
hotel for five star hotel the level of grooming in the UK was
5:31
really bad because I come from Italy where everybody really looks after themself
5:37
um the UK was really bad this changed after 10 years
5:43
and uh Men's Grooming then boom then there are lots of barber shops opened everywhere
5:50
so man could look after themself and had more places where to go
5:55
and yeah no it's great to be part of that and uh I was always interviewed to give
6:02
advice on men's hair beards shaving skincare
6:09
so I went to a lot of courses to learn a lot about skin care and
6:15
to to learn so knowledge is power so the more you know of what you do
6:22
before you can um they always had this um think about
6:28
something that I learned in Sicily where is the way to deal with people and
6:33
how to be social with people so haircutting is one thing
6:39
but when you when a client comes in you smile
6:45
give a hand you don't sort of go where you're going on holiday
6:50
no that guy wants to sit on the chair and have his hair done
6:57
I learned firm it's probably the art of
7:03
what's best for your hair do you ever let's grow your hair longer so that's
7:11
why I'm the rebel Barber because I've become then a specialist in in
7:17
grown man's hair longer I've become a specialist in
7:22
men with thin in hair to make their hair look thicker
7:28
so that my main thing was and the art that I've learned was to
7:35
make men look as best as they can whoever walked through that chair
7:42
yeah I love that we always so I go to our hair stylist I actually don't go to a barber I have multiple occasions but
7:49
but and so we could talk about the distinction but one of the we always argue about what to do with my hair and
7:56
I usually just defer to her uh defer to her expertise in that
8:02
um so I I that's interesting and I'm assuming that you guide your your clients in the same way
8:09
so I I say I'm a barber because I it's where my roots are from
8:15
but really I'm a men's hair stylist okay because there's a difference between
8:21
those two at least in the U.S there's actually a difference in licensing but I'm interested because in so you know
8:27
we're kind of a largely American audience not totally American audience but when you think of barber shops in the U.S which I know you Tour all over
8:33
the world you know we've got the and now there's this trend to do this vintagey
8:39
type Barbershop where you have the old school chairs they're using the you know
8:44
the vibrant those old school vibrating hand massagers on your neck and you know they're blowing off with pneumatic hoses
8:51
and and all that so there's kind of this Vision that we have what's the difference between that and what first
8:56
of all what you saw in Sicily what you grew up with and then also what is traditional in the UK
9:03
so the the Sicilian was uh very traditional he was
9:10
uh as traditional as you can get but there wasn't any massage any head
9:17
massage none of that with the America with the license it's
9:25
very similar to Sicily so you need the license to be a barber
9:31
now the UK has got has this amazing freedom
9:37
where you don't need the license so Kevin I can teach you um in two weeks
9:43
I get you over to London and you can start cutting hair wow so you don't need the license you can just open a barber
9:49
shop so it's pure freedom because it's not it's not like you're a dentist you're a
9:54
doctor you're a Veterinary Barbara and you can
9:59
pretty much if you have the the basic uh skill
10:05
craft in yourself then you you can learn it Barbara the way I see it is uh
10:14
is a way of uh art and how you can transform somebody
10:20
so what what I tell you okay this is uh I go straight to the point
10:25
so in the UK I just talk about the UK about men's hair
10:32
so Mente in the UK for me at the moment is boring and
10:37
uninspiring ninety percent of men
10:42
have short back insights sure and a bit longer on top
10:48
if you're listening to this audio and have not seen any of my videos uh Carmella just described my hair just so
10:54
you know sorry don't feel bad whatsoever I want to I
11:00
I'd love to explore that more but don't feel bad at all I mean that makes sense no but it's uh look I started at nine I
11:08
almost have 40 years experience in this industry so by now I should be retired
11:13
instead I'm just going and uh like I've always been I've always
11:20
been um I've always uh but this is what I'm seeing now so
11:27
there are many reasons of this is one of the main reasons guys have had
11:34
thin in hair and that's a guy's problem thinning hair
11:39
so yes you keep your hair short that's the best thing even so
11:45
some guys think they have thin and hair but they don't so they could do some there are tricks
11:51
to sort of uh make hair look thicker without looking ridiculous
11:57
then there's a another thing that Barbers today
12:03
learn how to cut hair with clippers yeah
12:09
um the and then they learn how to use the scissors
12:14
so automatically when somebody sits on the chair s off because
12:20
that's gonna take 10-15 minutes and and you see guys that grow their
12:27
hair longer always go to hair stylists because they know how to deal with
12:33
longer hair the other thing with men is uh stigma
12:39
yeah so we see this like uh like men 90 of men have short
12:46
back and sides ninety percent of women
12:51
have long hair yep and what happens is uh
12:58
when men grow their hair over that four week period five-week period
13:04
everybody starts going oh my God you need a haircut foreign
13:11
everybody starts going oh my God you need a haircut straight away and so that's where I'm
13:19
being the the rebel Barber and I'm going to try and change this
13:26
it's not just stigma it's um creatures of habit yeah so men would
13:32
have the same haircut for when they're a little kid so when they're old they would never
13:39
change it I mean that's that's yeah go beyond a certain level oh no
13:46
so stigma the Ed you probably hear me talk about stigma and creatures of habit for
13:54
a long time I'll describe I'll describe the reason I
13:59
have the haircut that I do and you can tell me you know I've had so when I was a kid I had really long hair
14:06
but I and then I had you know I went through the 80s and 80s phase grew up in you know early 80s uh had the mullet
14:14
with the little rat tail thing that was popular you know do that kid thing and then I started cutting my hair short and
14:20
I've kind of keep it keep it relatively short but I I do it for a few reasons first of all I think my shorter hair
14:26
makes my face look thinner because I'm kind of getting that John Travolta you know Val Kilmer big head I kind of have
14:33
a big head anyway and so that you know and feel free you could well you could kind of go through all this but my hair
14:40
is super wavy and curly so traditionally as I grow it out it just gets bigger it
14:46
doesn't necessarily get longer it doesn't have tight curls or anything like that it just is is since and this
14:52
has got quite a bit of product in it Pomade well you you have hair yeah yeah I mean my my grandfather the reason I'm
15:00
so red is because I'm 1 8th Native American my grandfather died at like 90 and still had a full head of black hair
15:06
the other thing is as I grow in my sides I there's a little bit of white and gray
15:13
and so I I kind of like it it tends to feel like it ages me a little bit you
15:19
know there's this there's this meme I saw the other day and as far as like thinner the there's a guy in in a mirror
15:26
with long with his hair that where he needs a haircut and he's kind of he weighs like 250
15:31
pounds and then it says after my haircut and these all like super chiseled and ripped so it like
15:37
there's this like thinning effect and it's psychological right so like
15:42
it's it's completely but I kind of walk through walk through what you would do you know in my case and again if you're
15:49
not watch if you're not watching this go go to my YouTube channel and you can see what see what we're talking about but
15:56
yeah it's uh it's uh what you just explained
16:02
is what I said about stigma so it's a perception
16:08
so you have a perception that your shorter hair is gonna remove the gray and it's gonna make your head
16:15
look slimmer it's it's a it's only a perception and it's a man perception and it's a
16:23
continuation of a creature of habit Kevin you're not alone it's it's ninety percent of men
16:30
that are doing the same and and I get my hair cut every two and a half to three weeks like I can I can
16:38
grow hair like it grows fast I was joking so I could have another company if I didn't have to remove all the hair
16:45
that I that I have to remove because I could just grow hair like crazy but the the the the thing is is that
16:54
with where the level of uh Barbara I do look I only have private clients and I I
16:59
go around and they come to me and I do photo shoots and and product endorsements
17:06
is if there's no point you coming to me me doing your hair
17:12
so you come to me I go all right Kevin grow your hair longer
17:18
if you want to see me that's what I do and I I will get you to a level
17:25
where and you know what you probably will grow your hair go you know what I don't like it I want to go back short fine
17:33
most of the time I will
17:38
I'm writing what I'm saying you basically have so I just don't get a
17:45
haircut for six months or whatever no I would say uh for me probably three
17:51
months would would do it but and then you go and shape it after that yeah do a
17:57
reshape so when I grow some with his hair longer they don't come and see me once I get into a proper shape
18:05
they come and see me after two months after two months
18:10
something like that and they go you know I'm really enjoying it so what happens is and this is what happens
18:18
guys will tell you your hair is getting longer woman
18:24
will sort of go oh I like your hair with a bit of a curl in there
18:30
yeah I I could guarantee and I speak to a lot of women about men's hair so we
18:36
could I could be in a restaurant we can chat about this all of them all of them
18:41
say yeah men's hair is boring short back inside and then we sort of look at somebody
18:46
with a bit longer hair goes oh that that's interesting
18:51
I mean are we talking like Matthew McConaughey long because he's you know he's obviously because he's an actor and
18:57
I know you actually deal with a lot of a lot of you know stars and and movie production and that kind of stuff but
19:03
like he currently has very long and he has curly hair so it's kind of this
19:09
yeah I mean it has a It looks interesting for sure yeah uh there's not so what's
19:17
happening today is um Harlow Matt Matt Harlow the UK rapper
19:25
anyway he's got curly hair I uh I need to get his name uh there's not actually
19:32
Many Men role models that long hair
19:38
now in the UK we had by the way this is what I'm saying now
19:43
I'm going to throw this out on social media very soon it hasn't gone out yet so I've been
19:49
keeping it so you're the first person that's getting this that and you could
19:55
go to tick tock Instagram nobody say this what I'm saying
20:00
but it's uh I've been researching it for quite a bit
20:05
so we had in the UK David Beckham the footballer
20:12
so David Beckham when he's in his young age he did lots
20:18
of hairstyles he did long hair short hair Mohican uh mohawk
20:24
anything you did he was copied um in the UK we don't have a role model
20:31
today for men everybody has the short boring
20:39
back inside sorry I I don't mean to and this is what I don't want to do is criticize anybody that has short hair I
20:46
have to be careful yeah I mean I don't I don't take it that way personally because everybody has their own personal style I mean it so it's it's a funny
20:54
story with me because 50 I've been married 28 years just celebrated it last week but early in my marriage my wife
21:01
would literally just take a number three or number four like the whole thing just kind of buzz it up a little shorter
21:07
number two on the sides and then my daughter when my daughter got to be early teen she's like Dad you gotta get
21:15
and I was like the Crocs and cargo shorts and just the quintessential nerdy
21:20
father and I'm not criticizing anybody else except for if you're wearing Crocs they're definitely better to choose to
21:27
choose those are I wrote an article once comparing Crocs to minivans this basically just means that you've given
21:32
up um but side note so she was like you have to do something about your hair and
21:38
your style and all that so who was saying that my daughters my daughter said that to me how old was your
21:44
daughter 12 or 12 or 13. did you see what I'm saying so she started she started to be
21:50
like Dad you look you know and I have a pretty decent social media presence and we're I have multiple Brands where I'm
21:57
out front and so it became important and then what's funny is even with this with this
22:04
style I used to have a taller pompadour a little bit a little bit more in the front and um people started talking about my
22:11
hair like it became this thing I one of my buddies literally introduces me as the dude with good hair
22:18
primarily because I'm 50 and I still have all my hair I think yeah
22:24
another thing that I haven't uh come out with it yet and
22:29
it's the Carmelo my method of working okay so my method
22:36
of working is bespoke to every single individual
22:41
person so if you come in somebody else comes in you've got different hair from somebody
22:47
your profession is different your your age is different your skin tone is
22:53
different you the the way your hair grows is different your hair can be thick fine
22:59
the direction of the hair gray hair the density of hair so I look before
23:06
somebody sits on my head it says for the first time before you sit on the chair I already
23:12
know what to do but once you sit on the chair I go how would you like your hair
23:19
so I will get something back most of the time I get um because then people know me and have
23:26
recommended to me they say well I come here to get advice from you okay that's what I want
23:32
once you give me advice all right I'm doing now whatever I want and I'm telling you what I feel because after 40
23:40
years of experience I've I've gained some sort of uh knowledge again I'm not
23:46
always right and sometimes I get clients sitting on my chair
23:52
and their hair is cut well and it's amazing because it's there's nothing I can do
23:58
here it's like um I think as your hair is it's fine
24:04
I'm honest in that sort of way but if this any Improvement and Improvement can also
24:11
be in when bloke is his hair is thinning I've got techniques of cutting hair
24:18
so make the hair look thicker there's products to make the hair look thicker
24:24
these guys use the wrong products and make their hair look greasy you you want
24:32
the head to look thicker yeah yeah I specialize in that as well apart
24:38
from growing the hair longer I'm curious so just to shift gears a
24:43
little bit I love that information but I'm interested so if we're talking to kind of the every obviously you deal
24:49
with a level of clientele that's not really the average
24:54
bloke as you would say right so we were talking before we started started the
24:59
recording that so many men don't do anything with their
25:05
hair so like they're literally just kind of maybe go to Supercuts or you know
25:10
whatever with there's nothing wrong with that necessarily but it's it's the I want to talk through kind of overall
25:18
styling grooming all of those as it relates to kind of the normal guy kind
25:24
of going through that because I know you deal with all sorts of people but you know this is something that I think is lacking in at least American culture
25:33
um as far as men go it's it's over here as well uh yeah
25:40
so it's not the thought of the the guy uh that goes to the barbershop has his
25:46
hair short uh should be the barber to sort of go
25:51
you I think we could your hair could be a bit longer so I'm not inspiring to
25:56
just uh just men and it's not men's fault when they go to
26:02
the barber shop is the barber that needs to sort of go all right let's get your hair growing a bit longer
26:08
because some guys with shorter hair on the size does not suit it because
26:15
um this this different head shapes and but we need the hair a bit longer a
26:24
bit on the sides and something going on uh but so I say something about the UK about 10
26:31
years ago there was a a longer hair period there was a good
26:39
styling period models it was uh yeah it was getting really
26:44
good in terms of hair lymph they was it was interesting was Arty
26:51
then 10 years ago the Clipper was interested introduced
26:57
heavily into the barbershop over here probably you had this scene that's just
27:03
that's just running Clippers through your hair so it's it's fades
27:10
okay yeah so the Fades is when there's literally no hair on the side and then
27:16
it fades through now this was a technique used uh in um
27:23
many black barber shops where it's understandable because yeah
27:29
with the hair it's the best thing it's just really kind of short and this so specialized so the barber shops in the
27:36
UK learned the technique doing it on everybody and
27:42
for me the Clippers have sort of um
27:48
diminished their art of using scissors and the Art of uh uh
27:54
being interested that's why I said men's hair today is boring and not interesting and on a black guy
28:02
with really short hair looks really good perfect you leave just a bit longer on top looks amazing you can't because if
28:08
they grow it out I mean that's where the afro comes in their hair yeah curly yeah and then with the and then which is you
28:14
know another style for sure yeah and then you can do other thing with afro hair but if you don't grow it out
28:22
it's the best to keep it really short and it looks amazing but the the UK barber shops have then
28:29
implemented this to everybody and I look around and go
28:35
it's been implemented in a way of it doesn't suit
28:42
um yeah I don't know what I feel sad about it
28:47
but it I go around I go around I go around and look at men's hair all the time
28:53
and I go oh God tight
29:00
yeah it's uh yeah only because I see uh something and
29:06
that's what I do it's my job yeah now again get I'm curious how we get men to care about
29:14
their hair right like I think some men do and I think you know kind of
29:21
keeping it tidy is probably okay but like I don't I just like me right it was
29:26
just easy to take the Clippers and Buzz it down and all that kind of stuff like what would you say to convince someone's
29:32
like I don't care about my hair I wash it every day I don't even do anything with it I maybe run a comb
29:38
through it that's it right so try and break the the
29:45
routine and the stigma trying
29:50
so the hair gets inside of here around the neck so just get a clip and just get rid of the hair of the neck yeah just go
29:57
beyond an extra two weeks hey guys thanks for listening to this episode I hope you're enjoying it and
30:03
learning a lot if you're looking for extra help don't forget that I do offer one-on-one coaching we can talk through
30:09
a ton of different issues I can give you guides guidelines and logistical help to
30:14
help you take that next step or go to that next level in some of the things that you're dealing with your life we
30:19
also have some course content some guides and a lot of educational materials over at maxed outman.com for
30:28
the coaching go ahead and go to maxoutman.com coaching and you can learn about that and then just go to maxed
30:33
outman.com for everything else thanks for joining us now back to the episode of the usual haircut enjoy your hair a
30:41
tiny bit longer the other thing is that you know you saved probably two weeks of money there
30:47
for one haircut try and go another week just tidy up back here
30:53
and you've got another two weeks so you've got another another two haircuts so you saved money
30:59
try and find somebody that goes can you cut hair full
31:05
guys with longer hair try and do a bit research for somebody that cuts hair not with clippers but
31:11
with scissors and give that shape okay that's my advice yeah to try to because it's you
31:19
know obviously my this this is a my audience tends to be a little bit
31:24
more conservative and um and so but it's like your wife or girlfriend will
31:31
appreciate you having hair that actually looks good right and
31:37
let's I want to get into grooming as well because this this whole conversation basically is I want to
31:42
educate men to kind of like I was thinking about a title for this episode it's like get off your ass and
31:48
comb your hair it's kind of you know the the idea but I I I'm thinking in terms
31:54
of like how do we get them you know to improve their fashion and grooming and hair styling and all of that
32:01
yeah it's it's I think it's actually a as I said the the guy is not gonna know
32:08
how to do it it's not going to feel comfortable still he goes and sees somebody like me
32:14
or somebody at that level of course they're probably gonna charge more
32:19
or it's not gonna feel comfortable going into that place but it is it's breaking that sort of
32:27
habit and routine of going to the same barber shop going to the same place
32:33
and having the same thing every time cry out at the end of the day look it's it's
32:38
only here and if somebody tells you what are you doing with your hair uh just throwing it
32:45
out a bit see what happens it's it's just going it's a bit like
32:53
um what what do men do when they're like over 40 midlife crisis they buy a motorbike
33:00
or a quarterback here yeah or they go hiking for like 10 kilometers or they do
33:06
a marathon hair is no different hair is uh breaking a habit of what
33:14
you've been doing since your child break it go and find somebody who makes your hair
33:20
look good go and ask him what products should I use how can I make my hair thicker I always had short hair on board
33:27
of my short hair now the nice thing about hair is that I mean
33:34
assuming you have hair it'll it'll you know it grows and then like you can
33:40
change it if you decide later I just really don't like this just go cut it it'll grow back it's fine yes it'll grow
33:47
back you can um cut it short if you don't like it but uh
33:52
the the other things a lot of guys with thin and hair and I've seen here in the UK the last 20 years
33:58
hair transplants here just like the normal thing so yeah thin and Air they transplant their head so they take
34:06
hair from the back and put them here yeah there's tons of solution I know I
34:11
know like Rogaine and some of the other things are actually fairly effective right I mean obviously once the hair
34:17
follicle was dead it's not that's where the hair transplant comes in right no no yeah that's right chemical stuff
34:23
actually work no they don't work okay
34:29
uh it's just the I shouldn't say this here I probably shouldn't put it here just to get a sponsor from broge uh it's
34:37
just it's just the alcohol that work the ALCO stimulates the blood flow and the
34:43
ALCO expands the hair because the cuticle is open making the hair look thicker oh okay it's uh otherwise uh the
34:53
road game will cost a thousand pounds a bottle wow probably yeah it's it's the alcohol
35:01
uh in the alcohol content of the product
35:06
yeah look I mean I look I'm not endorsed by anybody I'm not sponsored by anybody
35:11
so I'm not too worried about whether or not we call out because I don't want people that are here saying oh I'd love
35:17
to grow my hair out but it's it's thin therefore I will go get this whereas so
35:24
you're saying basically and I mean hair transplants have been around forever I actually had a guy that I worked with in
35:29
the 90s that kind of like he had a bad hair transplant I mean it literally looked like you know where you take like
35:36
a bald cap and you can and they're they're doing color where they pull the hair through it looked like that only
35:42
just very sparse and it's like don't do that get somebody there that's what they're doing right it's like a a doll
35:48
you know like the dog like a Barbie they're plucked in that's the old system now they're putting them one by one uh
35:56
I've had about 30 of my clients because I've consulted my clients in doing it because I've introduced them
36:03
to the places where they do it and the the worst thing they can do is just doing it
36:09
oh yeah perfect line here nobody has a perfect client here so you have to do a
36:14
bit rigid up and down so to make it look natural and what are the what does that usually
36:20
cost I know we're looking at pounds are actually fairly similar now but yeah
36:25
well in London about seven thousand for eight thousand pounds going on to fifteen thousand depending where you're
36:32
going and also depending how much you need sometimes people just need a tiny bit here
36:37
tiny bit here some people go you know need to go in for two days all depends about your donor
36:45
how much hair you have on the donut area if your donut area is weak you cannot
36:50
then fill up the top that much and they kind of basically use like a almost like a hole punch right they essentially
36:57
punch it out and then punch it back in it's like moving a tree in your yard you'd cut it out and you move it to
37:03
another spot so I've been in the operation room when they were doing it with my mask like a doctor at some point
37:11
they wanted me to do it because they wanted to teach me but I don't know so
37:16
what they do half the day they take out the hair from the back one by one and
37:21
it's with a an injection and then they twist it around pull out and they put their hair in the tray
37:28
then like you said the second part of the day they punch holes
37:33
and in those holes then they put in the hair of course they have the uh the microscopic glasses so then punch
37:42
the hair in the hole and it takes about two days for the hip hair to attach to the blood flow
37:49
and it starts growing again that's crazy and I mean honestly yeah seven to ten Grand 15 grand that's a lot
37:56
of money however the and I mean you know some some people are fine being bald actually
38:03
it's one of you know I I'm I feel very blessed that I have a full head hair like I don't like I I my dad is bald
38:12
and he's always done the you know the the all right just stop dad you know he's
38:18
kind of doing that doing that come with her I mean he's in his 80s now so he cares less but he went bald really early
38:24
my brother started thinning really thin so I feel very blessed to have a full head of hair but like the impact of your
38:31
confidence appearance and all that is probably pretty significant right it is
38:38
uh especially on the youngsters and I've seen recently you know uh youngsters are
38:46
as early as 22 23 25 in their 20s having
38:51
hair transplants and for them it's like
38:56
you know it's it's a confidence thing of a of a man yeah
39:02
50s or 60s going bald it's kind of expected if you're in your 20s have you
39:08
I mean you've studied all this stuff is that a result of stuff like you know phthalates and all like all
39:13
these chemicals that are in our system that it's happening younger I mean obviously we have type 2 diabetes
39:19
at age 12 and all these other things based on diet exercise chemicals and all
39:25
that stuff yeah I'm just curious if we if we know why people are going bald yeah it's
39:32
mainly uh it's uh it's already in our DNA
39:38
okay so the DNA you already you if you got the bad DNA from your
39:44
grandparents from your your grandfather your grandmother and you have that DNA you you lose hair
39:52
it's it's not much you can do and it's to do with a with an enzyme
39:58
and uh that connects with a high Hydro testosterone
40:03
that then uh stimulates the the hair loss speed you'll see like a
40:09
the grandfather will have the same hair loss or the father or them from uh the Sun and you can have
40:18
three or four brothers two brothers have no hair the other two brothers have hair
40:24
it depends from your DNA and then there's other factors that could be
40:29
stress factors like alopecia but they're factors that
40:36
happen for other reasons in life but the DNA is uh in
40:43
bigger set is the reason okay I wanna I wanna ask a question because I've we live in kind of come you
40:50
know farmer country so does do guys that wear hats all the
40:55
time does that cause you to lose your hair faster or are the guys wearing hats all the time because they've already
41:00
lost their hair that's the because a lot of times you'll see these guys pull their head their
41:06
hats off and they're like like where's your hair no wonder you wear a hat all the time
41:15
it's a DNA thing um and it just that's that's that's how
41:21
you're meant to look it's a bit like the eyebrows you know you get some guys I start their eyebrow starts
41:28
growing longer if you look at the the grandfather will have the same eyebrows yeah I literally just trimmed mine this
41:35
morning by the way oh well there's there's an actor that kind of has like there's caterpillars growing on their on
41:42
their face like it just mine just grow like crazy so I have to kind of keep them
41:53
yeah yeah they get and they start to get S very long if I go yeah do that so
42:00
and when you cut them they come out quickly and then they sort of stop at a certain length they don't grow any
42:06
longer yeah have you noticed that they're sort of uh remote controlled
42:12
yeah I kind of I try to keep them relatively relatively twin uh trimmed up
42:17
but using an eyebrow I was thinking about that this morning using the eyebrow brow trimmer is one of the most
42:24
dangerous parts of grooming because one little slip
42:30
especially if you got like me you got to be on camera and and that kind of stuff I'm like it's yeah it's frightening you
42:36
have to go to your wife's makeup room to sort of uh just ask for some uh draw
42:41
them in draw them hey I know something uh eyeliner painting your eyebrow
42:48
so a lot of times you go there is a trend yeah it's it's just gone it's Let's uh I
42:53
want to talk about grooming right like I I assume this is the same in the UK but in general
42:59
men are not prone to good grooming habits is that something that you and so
43:06
like I would you know whether it's showering regularly you know kind of keeping yourself if you
43:12
got a beard kind of keeping it trimmed up all of these you know using good hair care products using good skin care
43:19
products all of that stuff kind of is not quote unquote manly which is funny
43:24
because this is about masculinity this whole thing but what I'm trying to get across is it's it's not unmanly to take
43:31
care of yourself and keep yourself groomed I I think this there's been a
43:36
uh a massive Improvement in the last years and I think there's a bit more
43:41
effort of course women would like you know uh we're not never going to reach
43:47
the level of a woman screwing uh it did this you know there's even look
43:54
even cutting the hair short that that is grooming at the end of the day that is every two weeks going to the barber shop
44:01
and having a short haircut that is looking after yourself and showering deodorants
44:08
um looking off the bed I I think it's more
44:13
it's more is how you change the look that's that's where I'm
44:20
I'm more strongly based on and is that PR that's primarily with
44:25
hair but also you're talking about clothing and you know all of those kind of things are you so if a guy's super
44:32
unkempt like big cargo shorts like I used to be a shirt that's two sizes too big like you know if you're wearing you
44:39
know because like now the trend is seven inch inseam shorts you know not quite
44:44
Magnum PI back in the 80s level but I just actually bought three new pairs of
44:50
shorts that are kind of you know more in pastel type colors seven inch inseam and I was like these are awesome these look
44:56
so much better than like longer shorts and I have hey guys thanks for listening
45:01
to this episode I hope you're enjoying it and learning a lot if you're looking for extra help don't forget that I do
45:06
offer one-on-one coaching we can talk through a ton of different issues I can give you guides guidelines and
45:13
logistical help to help you take that next step or go to that next level in some of the things that you're dealing
45:18
with in your life we also have some course content some guides and a lot a lot of educational materials over at
45:26
maxed outman.com for the coaching go ahead and go to maxoutman.com coaching and you can learn about that and then
45:32
just go to maxed outman.com for everything else thanks for joining us now back to the episode I have relatively thin legs I work out all the
45:39
time so they're fit but they're relatively thin um and like I try to buy shirts that are
45:45
what I do is if I find a shirt that makes because I'm fairly athletic so if I find a shirt that makes me look
45:50
athletic I'll buy like four of them so I'm faint I'm vain like that but stuff
45:56
like that like choosing uh choosing to be a you know you don't have to be like Couture and on the runway look
46:03
but just choosing better choice making better no no I I can talk about London and I I see what goes on in London
46:10
and everybody looks good in terms of what they're wearing
46:19
they look after themselves it's just that hair thing for me is
46:27
um which you know is fine but that's uh I think they could be a bit more
46:32
creativity remember so you're like a lot of I assume in London you've got more
46:38
um you know business professionals and that kind of stuff there so they're probably better better everybody is of uh they they really spend a lot of money
46:46
in uh clothing and we've got a lot of choice here we've got a lot of uh
46:51
we've got a lot of people that give advice and on on dressing up and
46:57
where to wear and there's a lot of places there's a lot of choices and I I feel America I don't think that's
47:03
American culture I don't think American culture yeah I don't know much about you
47:09
know the but if you probably go to New York that'll be like London
47:14
yeah like in the financial district probably more so um you know it depends on where you're at but so that scene where you go Soho
47:21
you go to Bronx Queens it'll be trendy there'll be they the the the trainers there'll be
47:27
more Nike trainers uh vintage and and
47:33
for sure so I noticed you've got a little bit of you've got a little bit of growth in your beard
47:40
um is so here in the U.S these huge kind of
47:45
Grizzly Adams level beards you know just just huge are the
47:51
are the trend is that is that something that you guys have over there I don't grow up you know
47:57
again this is Vanity on my part but one of the big reasons I don't grow a beard is because it Age first of all my wife
48:03
doesn't like facial hair but it also ages Me by about 20 years if I grow out
48:08
my beard yeah and the same same with me uh after
48:14
it gets I shave once a week I think this is a personal thing so in
48:21
one week my it feels itchy and I need to get rid of it and processes starts
48:26
getting a few Grays so I said but this is on a personal level um I really don't know how guys can just
48:34
grow a big massive beard especially when it's summer and it's hot
48:41
but we've had this big trends of big beards here about five six years ago in
48:47
London and in the UK but they've all they've all come off
48:53
they've all become shorter so yeah I'll tell you something about the the
49:00
beard in 2008 there was a financial crisis
49:08
And when everybody lost their jobs every lawyer Banker person said they all
49:14
started growing their beards so when they then went back to work
49:19
everybody had like a stubborn a bed there also was uh David Beckham the role
49:25
model who grew a beard as well because he uh Gillette did not renew his
49:32
contract and he said you don't renew my contract from that
49:38
point on he went I'm never gonna shave ever again uh yeah he had a big contract with
49:46
Gillette before he then went I'm not I'm not not gonna shake then there was uh
49:52
the gladiates of Russell Crowe also what happened is
49:58
yeah back then man when they were going to their offices they were shaving every day
50:04
they went perfect we don't need to shave every day now we could just grow a beard
50:09
and it's sort of taken off that 10 15 minutes of shave every morning
50:16
to probably sleep an extra 10-15 minutes so I so beards look good at certain
50:25
point but if you let some people you let it grow out it looks bad it looks like you you're
50:32
just not looking after yourself so for me the the beard
50:38
is the silver the natural laziness of man to not look after themselves
50:45
even if they even if they actually spend a lot of money on beard care and oh no
50:50
that's different that's different it when the the culture of growing the bed
50:55
longer that's that's that's different that's uh
51:02
that's a style that's a trend um for certain places so it's it's a
51:08
Harley-Davidson Rider you know yeah he's gonna have a big beard I feel comp and
51:13
he looks good with the big beards because he's got the leather he's got a big Harley
51:30
I just can't see myself doing that
51:35
but I could see that guy with a square big but in London they've all a lot of the
51:42
big beards have come off that's that's interesting What's um so I
51:47
know you have a you have kind of a skin care product line um here and there what what advice so I
51:54
use a product line called matte for men which is actually um just a US brand and it works so I use
52:01
their facial cleanser and I use kind of a moisturizer which has a little bit of
52:07
um sunscreen in it and it's like I don't break out at all like I get my skin
52:13
stays clear and healthy and moisturized and all that um I don't think most men do much more
52:19
than just wash their face probably with whatever you know three in one body wash that they're they're they're
52:25
yeah I think this percentage is uh smaller going onto a routine uh
52:31
moisturize up is something that needs to be used especially when you live in a hot
52:39
country and and just by using soap on your skin you're depleting the sort of natural
52:46
barrier of oil you have in your skin so what happens by taking away that
52:52
natural barrier is your
52:57
fastening the the aging process of your skin so soap remove an oil from the skin is
53:05
bad and that's scientifically today especially scientifically proof so the product I have with Melodies is uh
53:13
it's a serum that goes to give you that Skin Barrier so the Skin
53:20
Barrier see the the skin is very clever
53:25
so you know when you use soap on your skin and you dry out your skin the skin knows to produce more oils so it's about
53:33
seven layers on the skin so they all go all right there's no oil up there this brings some oil up that's
53:40
why after you sometimes use the soap after about an hour or two the skin
53:46
starts getting oily that's because it's really work when you need to get worried about when we get
53:53
older that when you wash your skin with soap
53:58
it still stays dry that's a worrying thing because the skin then is going come on do
54:05
something yourself and don't use soap on your skin so we don't need to work so my
54:11
product what it does it's a product for sort of over 30 when the the elastin of
54:17
the skin and the collagen of the skin starts breaking down that's that's normal it needs help to have a barrier over the
54:25
skin to have delayed the aging process
54:32
and again that comes down with DNA as well but don't help it by
54:39
drying out your skin so you need there's a big difference yeah there's a big difference is it soap
54:48
moisturizers and mine is 100 oil and it has uh even in Primrose rosehip
54:57
almond there's a combination of various oils and vitamin E
55:02
that goes and helps so I mix it with a moisturizer mix them both together
55:07
put it on and hope for the best so I don't lose I don't I don't make my
55:14
skin cells work too much to produce the oil it's on the outside
55:20
and do you ship internationally or do you ship internationally I guess we should ask that question okay yeah all
55:25
right so it's just yeah you'll give me that URL in a bit but what okay so I've I've kept you for a long time so what
55:31
kind of give me the summation of advice for your average everyday man in terms
55:37
of hairstyle grooming fashion to kind of do take that first step to improve those
55:45
things improve your look improve your attractiveness to your spouse or other women you know not other women if you
55:52
have a spouse but you know women in general that kind of thing yeah I would
55:57
say uh be adventurous be different
56:04
do something different you just look different just don't don't look always the same as you do so it's
56:12
like you grow your beard grow your hair and Cone research nearby
56:19
who specialized in cutting longer hair
56:24
of course it's very difficult for me to to say do this is everybody's different
56:30
and I I'm just saying change the way you look
56:37
and I like it and grow grow your hair out right now but also also when you've
56:44
got have thin in hair you feel you have thinning hair there are products out there that can sort of mask
56:51
Okay so you spray something on I'm not saying you need to look
56:57
ridiculous you need to be subtle also I do hair colors so when the gray
57:04
hairs come through I subtly do color
57:09
you don't see a few gray hairs coming here on the side subtle I've still leave some great hairs
57:16
out like example I've got I've got probably you can see here I've got a few gray
57:22
hairs and I just colored my hair actually can I take this off so I'm going to show this Palm here so I'm grow
57:30
I've cut my hair for like a year can you hear me yeah
57:35
yeah I can hear you oops could you hit oh no can you hear me yeah I can hear you now you just can't
57:42
hear us without your headphones oh yeah of course yeah yeah I did all right yeah I got that all right I just put it here
57:48
so my so I used to have always short hair so I just grow my hair out and just curled it
57:54
out and I've been doing something I've been cutting my own hair for the last year so what I do
58:02
so I can just cut my hair I see where I'm cutting it
58:09
so I'm giving sort of and is this is not something you should
58:14
do at home so it looks so on if you're you know for
58:20
our for our audio for our Audio Only listeners it actually appears like you're just cutting cutting random parts
58:26
of his hair which is not necessarily because he knows what he's doing but it kind of looks like that I just wanted to
58:32
say I'm not saying this to do anything but what and me trying to say to
58:37
somebody grow your hair now I have very fine hair
58:44
yeah and probably it shows but I wanted to
58:50
fight the thing of just always have it short hair so I'm growing my hair longer and I
58:56
haven't been cutting my hair from a barber for one year and I'm not saying this to do
59:03
but it's just like a personal experiment so I cut hair myself
59:09
yeah uh this is a on a persevere and
59:14
everything I say is personal from me and my way of thinking
59:21
and I'm not saying to anybody you need to do this because you look bad the main
59:27
thing is you need to feel comfortable on how you look and you need to be happy yourself and
59:33
how you look I can say what I want and what I feel
59:39
because that's my profession yes so that's uh my principle uh
59:45
probably yeah so myself advice I like it and yeah
59:51
just be adventurous and kind of maybe take what's funny is that I I'm I missed making my haircut appointment so I'm
59:58
actually I have a I have a gap between my appointments so I actually have a seven week gap between my appointments
1:00:06
so like just for fun I might just go ahead and you know it's gonna grow anyway but I I like not you know what I
1:00:12
would trim the sides right I would normally I normally trim the sides once a week but uh maybe I just don't do that
1:00:18
all right you probably would keep in touch with your hair and um every
1:00:24
free full week you send me a photo what should I do now what does and I send you
1:00:29
a photo probably of what I think you should do but again I don't want to
1:00:36
okay the main thing I've come onto this show is it's out to inspire men and feel more
1:00:42
comfortable and feel more confident that's why I've come to a show and I feel if I was just a normal Barber
1:00:48
coming to the show I would say yeah Clipper your hand just clip on your hair every two weeks
1:00:54
no uh for me I wanted to bring in that bit of difference it's now Kevin
1:01:02
yourself you you now thinking about growing your hair longer yeah
1:01:08
stylus has been yelling at me to do it forever and I've always oh my God so she's been telling you to do it
1:01:16
we argue about it uh she hasn't been so she's been trying to grow the top a
1:01:21
little bit we fight these my hair does this weird like all in different directions so okay
1:01:28
look at my hair what does now you see these bits that come over here
1:01:34
over the years this these these [Applause]
1:01:40
everybody's going no what what are you doing it's like you are you having a
1:01:45
haircut I said no I just I don't I do a haircut myself I haven't had my haircut for a year
1:01:51
I'm just growing it out and a woman go oh I really like your
1:01:57
hair so I like the curls I like guys are like are you
1:02:02
yeah if I before I was on the podcast um somebody told me are you gonna sort
1:02:09
your hair out no so I'm doing somebody's hair and he's
1:02:15
telling me are you gonna sort your hair though the whole point is this don't don't guys don't worry about this
1:02:22
just this is hair don't worry just feel adventurous yeah yeah grow your hair
1:02:27
longer don't look like everybody else show back insides grow your hair longer if you have hair
1:02:33
just grow your hair out I know the intention was to inspire so
1:02:41
and I like one of the things I love about this show is that I get to talk to tons of different people right and I'm
1:02:47
always inspired to do different things if I don't like if I don't like it I'll
1:02:52
just cut it off again that's not I mean it's like that's right but it's but it's good to be inspired from someone of your
1:02:59
stature uh you know not that I don't trust my I've been going to my hair stylist for 20 years so I totally trust
1:03:05
her and we have this like funny relationship because she we're we're kind of she does battle with my hair
1:03:12
because it changes every time I go in the the growth pattern kind of does this weird wavy thing and yeah it's fine go
1:03:20
with the wave let let the wave go out there's nothing wrong with the wave so Kevin it says five
1:03:28
eight it's different if you like by your your hairdresser has been
1:03:34
telling you for ages to grow your hair longer you mean come on that's that's that is a
1:03:42
yeah that's uh it's a stigma it's a creature of habit you think it's habit
1:03:48
100 it's a perception
1:03:54
grow your hair over for four weeks go to your hairdress and just go right I'm
1:04:00
here do whatever you want yeah that's it there we go actually it'll be set it'll
1:04:05
be seven because I can't get back into her for almost for until oh perfect in
1:04:10
end of August is is I want to see your hair at Mid July go go longer
1:04:16
um and that's you know that's a change that you've seen yourself and and the
1:04:23
people that are seeing also in the podcast actually when this goes live I
1:04:28
should uh when after this and then people go all right
1:04:34
because of Carmelo now this is how I look now inside whenever I put because if I keep
1:04:40
growing it this will be two two and a half months probably by the time this launches or or so and so then it'll I'll
1:04:47
have faith in your hairdresser that's been telling you for ages to grow your hair longer but you you're um I feel
1:04:54
comfortable talking to you about this to say I've got no no problem that's otherwise you
1:05:00
uh that's what you want my honesty I'm not slagging you off it's uh but your
1:05:05
hairdresser's been telling you grow your hair longer she'll be happy she'll be happy to know
1:05:11
that that you have uh have inspired me to listen to her also because we uh
1:05:17
she's we have a we I mean first of all you need to apologize to her I apologize to you
1:05:24
for not listening to you but
1:05:29
uh yeah because I also have respect of my colleagues and
1:05:36
and also is for yourself just see and how old is
1:05:41
your daughter now so 25 I have a 25 and then she's 25 my youngest is 20. the
1:05:47
last time your daughter told you was she was 13 yeah and you always had the same haircut
1:05:53
uh since we changed the style yeah so it's been at least 12 13 years since I've actually changed it's been a lot
1:06:00
it's been a little bit longer on top but I've had the short hair for at least three or four years gray all out and get
1:06:07
the curls get the waves going around well uh I'll I'll take your advice I
1:06:12
love I love to see that and if if you do that and then go you know what everybody likes right that's
1:06:20
but again if you don't like it you go back to what you have yeah he's a perception uh it's what I'm fighting at
1:06:28
the moment to change men's perception well I'll be I'll be a good I'll be a
1:06:33
good case study okay you'll be the perfect case study because if you see now and when if if this goes live
1:06:42
whenever you're going to do it in a month or two they said that's me now
1:06:47
yeah you'll be a good uh ambassador yeah I'll take it I mean taking in I'll
1:06:54
insert a little intro uh into the episode to be able to say I care here
1:06:59
here's what here's what I look like now so enjoy the enjoy this but at the end or at the beginning at the end probably
1:07:05
yeah probably at the end so then at the end uh uh now you have to grow your hair longer
1:07:10
all right I look forward to seeing that I'm on it well thank you so much Carmelo honestly this has been super interesting
1:07:17
and a little bit of you know hair therapy session for me so I appreciate you taking the time and sharing your
1:07:24
knowledge with us yeah thank you it's also we didn't probably touch the psychology of men and but that could be
1:07:31
probably for another time but actually we did such a psychology of man stigma and creature fabric that is
1:07:38
we'll come back and talk about my longer hair and you know oh we'd all love to see your longer hair and uh and without
1:07:45
the without these without the headphones a before and after photo will be great
1:07:51
thank you absolutely all right Camarillo thank you so much thank you thank you for having me
